Malioboro: The Most Famous Tourist Destination in the Center of Jogja


“It feels wrong when you come to Yogyakarta but not visit Malioboro”, this sentence may be heard when you come to visit Yogyakarta or usually called Jogja. Malioboro is the center and one of many tourist destinations in Yogyakarta. Malioboro offers views of the city center, shopping areas and is always filled by local people or tourists. In Malioboro, you can see many foreign tourists walking around. You can also choose to shop in a mall or traditional market here. In these shops, you can find batik clothes, Jogja souvenirs, Jogja special food, etc. Besides that, chairs are provided to rest if you feel tired walking around. If you feel thirsty, there are many sellers walking around and selling fresh drinks. Not only that, there are also food and snacks for sale if you are hungry. In Malioboro, there are also several bicycles that can be borrowed to go around Malioboro. Some people also provide scooter rental services for visitors who do not want to bother pedalling a bicycle.

Another thing that can be found in Malioboro is the Vredeburg Fortress as well as the Museum. Vredeburg Fort is a silent witness to the history of colonialism in Indonesia. This fort was built by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Then, this fort officially turned into the Fort Vredeburg Museum in 1992 with the approval of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX. The Fort Vredeburg Museum has excellent collections in the form of miniatures of the Boedi Oetomo Congress, dioramas of Soedirman's inauguration as the Great Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, Surjopranoto's typewriter, kendil (have same use as a bottle) used by Soedirman, Soetomo Documents, and military academy chairs.

Apart from museums, it is very easy to find hotels and inns around the Malioboro area. Various kinds of hotels and inns can be found here, ranging from inns with affordable prices to hotels with the best service. Therefore, you do not need to worry if you forget the time and have to stay overnight.

With the comfort and facilities available at Malioboro, visitors do not need to worry about the price of a ticket to enter Malioboro because the entrance fee to Malioboro is free.
